Joyce Watterman Becomes First Jersey City Mayoral Candidate to Submit Petitions

Jersey City, NJ — Today, Jersey City Council President Joyce Watterman officially submitted her petitions of nomination for the 2025 mayoral race, becoming the first candidate to do so. Her campaign submitted 150 petitions, exceeding the required 100 certified signatures needed by the August 21st deadline.​



“Today, I am proud to take this crucial step towards becoming the next Mayor of Jersey City,” said Watterman. “By submitting these petitions, I follow in the footsteps of, and I am attempting to stand on the shoulders of Marilyn Roman, Willie Flood, and Melissa Holloway. We are demonstrating the strong grassroots support our campaign has garnered from residents across our diverse city.”​

Watterman’s campaign emphasized that, if elected, she would be the first woman to serve as mayor in Jersey City's history. She is running on a platform focused on inclusive leadership, economic opportunity, and affordable housing.​



“Our city faces significant challenges, from ensuring economic opportunities for all to addressing the pressing need for affordable housing,” Watterman added. “I am committed to bringing fresh ideas and inclusive leadership to City Hall, building on the progress we’ve made while addressing the issues that matter most to Jersey City residents.”​


The non-partisan mayoral election is scheduled for November 4, 2025. Other declared candidates include former Governor Jim McGreevey, Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea, Ward E Councilman James Solomon, and former Board of Education President Mussab Ali.
