In the early days of 2025, Jersey City was shaken by two violent incidents that highlighted stark disparities in public response and media attention. Council President Joyce Watterman addressed these events in a poignant statement, urging the city to confront systemic inequalities in how communities are protected and valued.

Two Tragedies, Unequal Responses

The first incident involved a brutal, unprovoked attack on a man near the Exchange Place PATH station, which garnered immediate public outrage and swift calls for increased police presence in the area. In contrast, the fatal shooting of Rahmiere Morris in the Greenville neighborhood received comparatively muted attention. Watterman questioned this disparity, asking why some neighborhoods receive prompt action while others are met with silence.

Highlighting Systemic Inequities

Watterman emphasized that these incidents are not isolated but indicative of deeper systemic issues. She stressed the need for equitable safety measures across all neighborhoods, stating that every resident deserves to feel safe and supported, regardless of their zip code.

A Vision for Inclusive Leadership

As a mayoral candidate, Watterman pledged to address these disparities by investing in community-based solutions and ensuring that all voices are heard in the decision-making process. She called for a united effort to build a Jersey City where safety and justice are not privileges but rights afforded to all.
