Jersey City Council President Joyce Watterman is setting the record straight in response to Councilman James Solomon’s claims of “irresponsible budgeting.” In a letter to Hudson County View, Watterman defends the city’s financial decisions and challenges Solomon’s portrayal of mismanagement.
She highlights the city’s ability to maintain critical services and increase investments in infrastructure and public safety—even during the challenges of the pandemic. Watterman also points to regular independent audits, improved contractor oversight, and increased transparency as evidence of responsible leadership.
While acknowledging property tax increases, she attributes them to state mandates and inflationary costs, not fiscal negligence. She also questions Solomon’s budget record, noting he voted against every city budget, including those that supported COVID-19 relief.
