As the November 5, 2024, Jersey City Board of Education election approaches, Council President and mayoral candidate Joyce Watterman has officially endorsed the “For Stronger Schools” ticket, giving her support to candidates Matt Schneider and Tia Rezabala. This is the first public endorsement from an elected official in this year’s BOE race.
Watterman praised Schneider and Rezabala for their dedication to academic excellence, fiscal transparency, and inclusive leadership. She cited their combined experience in areas such as education, mental health, finance, and public service as critical to building a stronger, more accountable school system.
“I support Matt and Tia because they reflect the kind of leadership our students and schools deserve—thoughtful, community-rooted, and forward-looking,” Watterman stated.
The “For Stronger Schools” ticket positions itself in contrast to the “Education Matters” slate, which is backed by the Jersey City Education Association and supported by county-level figures like Hudson County Executive Craig Guy, Commissioner Bill O’Dea, and Councilman-at-Large Daniel Rivera.
With seven candidates running for three open seats, the race is expected to be highly competitive. Watterman’s endorsement brings new visibility to Schneider and Rezabala’s campaign and reinforces her broader platform of improving education through effective governance and community engagement.
